We are happy to offer to our customers the ability to select or change a specific version of PHP to ensure compatibility with the web scripts or other software you are using on your website, such as WordPress. While we always recommend keeping your site up-to-date and upgrading to the latest version of the script or application you are using, sometimes you may find yourself needing more time to accomplish such a task.
That’s why we offer secured, backwards-compatible PHP versions even when PHP itself doesn’t keep older versions up-to-date. While continuing to use an outdated PHP version doesn’t protect your site against security issues within your script or software installed on your site, our alternative PHP versions (known as alt-php) will prevent any old PHP-related security issues for those versions from being actively exploited on your website.
Switching to a Newer Version of PHP
Our default, system-wide PHP version (known as ea-php) is usually the last known supported version provided by PHP. We also offer more recent versions that you can easily switch to. To switch to a later (more recent) version of PHP compared to our system-wide default, please go to cPanel > MultiPHP Manager and select your desired PHP version from the dropdown menu as shown below:
Please avoid selecting any PHP version indicated as “alt-php” in this interface. You should use the following instructions instead for switching to any alt-php version we offer.
Switching to an Older Version of PHP
In the case of switching to an older, otherwise unsupported version of PHP that is lower than our default system-wide PHP version, please go instead to cPanel > Select PHP Version. This interface differs from the MultiPHP Manager as it provides ‘secured’ versions of older PHP software (under the alt-php moniker) to enable users more time to upgrade their web scripts or software to a more current version of PHP.
Selecting one of the non-native (alt-php) versions from the dropdown will immediately switch your website to use this older, more secured version of PHP. However, this does not upgrade your script or software version, which may continue to be exploited by third-party malicious actors, so you should still exercise caution and upgrade your scripts or software as soon as possible.
You may note current versions available on the dropdown menu under the PHP Selector (cPanel > Select PHP Version) interface as well, which can still be used for long-term support as they are generally considered more secure versions compared to the default system-wide PHP we make available, which we may change more frequently to keep up with our commitment in using the last known supported PHP version as our system-wide default.
